Come join Crown Town Handmade on Thursday, June 30th at 7:30 pm at Amelie's French Bakery for our monthly Make-Out session! This month we're delighted to be featuring Rachel Lock of My Art Event (www.myartevent.com) . Rachel will be leading the group in making soft summer scarves from recycled t-shirts.

Materials will be provided, but feel free to bring any old shirts or stop by the thrift shop to grab a few in your favorite colors. Make Outs are always free but of course we're happy to accept donations to keep the crafting alive. See you there!

My creative participants came up with all kinds of inkable images, including: stamped labels for canned jellies, business logos, self portraits and animal shaped stamps. Join Crown Town Handmade on Thursday, May 26th at 7:30 pm at Amelie's French Bakery for our monthly Make-Out session, hosted this month by Sarah Terry of Stitch Machine. Transform one of your original drawings or doodles into a reusable printing block stamp! Once you finish carving your stamp, ink it up for a test-run and print on a postcard that you can drop in the mail. You'll be amazed at how professional and interesting a simple doodle can become!

Small drawings by Sarah will be available for carving if you need some inspiration. There will be time for sketching, but any drawings or logos you bring should be 4" x 6" or smaller.

Supplies will be provided, including soft blocks and cutting and tools. Feel free to bring any paper materials you'd like to print with your stamp creation. If you have past printmaking or scrap booking experience, we could always use extra linoleum cutters, soft dark "B" drawing pencils, and stamp ink pads. This event is always free, and Crown Town Handmade accepts donations to help cover material costs. See you there!

Join Emily of By Emily on April 28 at Crown Town Handmade's monthly Make Out for a chance to display your artistic skill. All you need is a plain piece of china (porcelain, glazed ceramic, or china will do). You'll paint your piece and take it home to bake in the oven to set the paint so you can use! Supplies will be provided, but feel free to bring your own pieces to decorate.

Emily (of By Emily) creates handmade kitchen accessories using designer fabrics and mixing bold colors and prints. Make Out: March Madness

March Madness is upon us, and "Free for All" describes March's Crowntown Handmade Make Out in both spirit and price. This month you decide the craft! Bring along a portable project of your own and join

us for an evening of crafting comradery (and maybe a little booze). If you don't have something to bring, join Donna Kirby of In Ten Years in folding paper cranes. Our cranes will join others being sent to sister cities in Japan as a show of support after the tsunami.

But since it's March Madness, we're not done yet. If you have a craft project that turned out more frankenstien than fabulous, bring it in for the Craftastrophe Contest and Swap. Feel free to trade and see if one crafter's trash can become another's treasure.

We had a great turnout for Crown Town Handmade's most recent Make Out Craft night! About 25 people gathered around Elizabeth of studio-e on 2/24/11 to learn how to make flower rings out of soda cans. Elizabeth had gathered an impressive collection of cans of all colors for everyone to use. We crimped wire, cut petals out of aluminum and learned how to use pliers to get the look that we wanted. Each person's creation was 100% unique!

I also love free. With the economy and my budget these days, free art is likely the only way I will acquire any art in my home. Need something to do this Friday night? Join several Crown Towners at the Mint Museum for First Friday, this month's theme is EndearMINT. We'll be in the DIY lab showing attendees how to make a felt flower accessory for your hair or his lapel.

Then, after you make your fab flowers, head on to the rooftop terrace to catch a salsa lesson! This late night event, hosted in conjunction with the Charlotte Symphony's KnightSounds series, will feature music by Orquesta Mayor and a performance by dancers from Metropolitan Ballroom.

First Fridays is an ongoing series at the Mint Museum Uptown. Each evening is loaded with artsy fun for all ages, including museum tours, live entertainment, art-making activities, a cash bar, and more! Admission is free for members, $10/non-members. My crafty day job: redesigning vintage clothing. My crafty obsession: handmade food. That's why this DIY Cheese Kit from Urban Cheesecraft just may be my favorite thing I've ever purchased from Etsy. There is something so satisfying about not just cooking, but crafting a foodstuff by hand and then having the pleasure of savoring every bite of it.

I've been adding homemade mozzarella and ricotta (This kit makes both!) to many of my favorite recipes. From eggplant parmesan, to lasagna, to homemade pizza, homemade cheese makes everything better. One kit from Urban Cheesecraft will give you 10 batches, which considering how much cheese like this costs at the market, is a deal for $22. Each batch makes quite a bit too, and only requires that you purchase a gallon of milk as the only other ingredient needed.

Now I'm going to take my glass of wine and sit down to a dinner of an "inside-out" eggplant parmesan stack layered with homemade mozzarella, homemade tomato sauce, and spinach sauteed with garlic and red pepper flakes. Here's to homemade cheese in under an hour - cheers!

What makes mine so great (besides the purple peacock-printed fabric) is the 100% bamboo lining that covers your eyes. Softer than silk. No, really. It’s not scratchy and will not pull on your delicate eyelids if you roll over in your sleep.

It also has two adjustable straps to fit every person perfectly. Prices range from $16-35 and the shipping was prompt!

This would make a great gift paired with loose tea and a mug!

The Makings of a Craft Fair

Imagine you are a small business owner. You want to do something good for your community and promote your business. You've tried emails, coupons and ads, but want to try something different for a change. How about hosting a craft show? That is exactly what Nicole Pennell, owner of Dogtopia in Charlotte, NC decided to do.

I wanted to know what inspired her to support local handmade artists and the Salvation Army of Greater Charlotte's Center of Hope, a charity which provides food and shelter homeless women and children.

“The idea started because one of my employees makes homemade crafts,” says Nicole. “She was getting ready to go to a craft fair in Greensboro one weekend, and we were talking about it. She asked if I had ever thought of holding one here.” She hadn't, and the idea for Dogtopia's craft fair was born.

Nicole went on to mention that as a business owner, she is always looking for new ways to get people to bring their pets in for a visit. Nicole continues, “Although this isn't a dog-related event it gives us a chance to meet a lot of people and show them what a great facility we have. I'm also very community-oriented.” The hosting of a charitable event was a natural fit.

Using social media for input, The Center of Hope was suggested by several people as the charity to benefit. “Most people that make homemade crafts are women” says Nicole, “I think there's something really beautiful about women using their own creativity and hard work to help other women who are going through hard times.”

With the charity decided, she needed artists to present their work at the show. Searching on the internet, specifically Etsy, a web site devoted to handmade goods, she began the difficult task of finding artists. As luck would have it, she contacted a member of CrownTown Handmade. Word spread quickly through the group and many were excited to be part of this special event.

Nicole will be donating all proceeds from the Dogtopia craft fair, including vendor fees and a raffle, entirely to the charity. So, come out and support a great cause, a community business owner and CrownTown Handmade members. Vanessa and guest host Brittany will show you how to apply frighteningly convincing Zombie make-up, what details to add to really appear undead, and how to make a delicious concoction of dripping blood to finish your appearance.

Join us after as Plaza Midwood experiences an invasion of the not quite dead. We will be reverse trick or treating and spreading the word about Crown Town Handmade. Be sure to wear clothing that you don’t mind getting blood all over and bring a mirror and towel. Check the supply list for other Zombie necessities.

A Successful Show...

Phew.

Those of you who do this most weekends, hats off to you!

I am three weeks into a 4 weeks craft show/event extravaganza. People, last night I fell asleep by 8 pm. 8 pm! Not too long ago, that was lunch time.

When you do participate in several shows, you start building a community, people get talking and acting silly. Hopefully those pictures never see daylight! Anyway, I have noticed how many times vendors ask each other "Are you having a good show? How many sales?" While money is important, c'mon we ARE selling our stuff at shows, there are other aspects that make a show successful to me.

If you've met my husband, you know he loves to talk. Perfect, since I am a bit shier. What is often overlooked about this skill, and it is a skill, is how it builds contacts and friendships, especially a good reputation, and those often leads to advance event notice, calls about product that hasn't hit the sales floor yet, consideration for consignment spots, and it goes on. I think you are picking up what I'm throwin' down, right?

Other vendors love what they do, too, so chatting with them is pretty educational. Whether they sell something you work with, or another product completely, it is interesting to hear their stories and why they do what they do. I have found out a ton of info about vintage jewelry just through chatting, info that would have taken forever looking through books and online sites.

So a successful show to me means more than just sales. Making friends with other vendors and customers, building contacts and inventory, learning more about what I love to do are all important aspects. Oh, and good food and no porta-potties. :)

This summer I took a day trip to Asheville, NC to attend The Big Crafty. Several friends and Crown Town Handmade members had booths and the list of artists in attendance was too good to resist taking a day trip.

Upon entering the Asheville Art Museum at Pack Place, I was immediately drawn to Lets Be Friend's booth. Each of her wonderful creations had a distinct personality and I couldn't resist taking my favorite home. Hank, the creature I adopted, is superbly made and I just knew that he would make the perfect addition to my home. Whenever taking a day trip, I always feel guilty leaving my cat locked up while I go gallivanting around. Catzilla Crafts helped ease my guilty conscious though when I saw her adorable cat toys stuffed with super strong organic catnip. I picked out this "kitty-o" for my kitty, Roarie, and gave it to him upon returning home. Roarie is a Siamese snow tiger and loves fetching and had me throwing the toy for him for over an hour! The organic catnip in his kitty-o made him an instant fan and this toy is now one of his favorites. I usually think of Etsy as the source for cool t-shirts, one-of-a-kind accessories, and awesome artwork, but this online marketplace is the place for ALL things handmade. Even food. For someone who is obsessed with anything that comes out of the kitchen, this has been an exciting discovery.

I've now purchased a few edibles from Etsy (cake-flavored lollipops for a friend and a DIY cheese kit that you'll be hearing more about very soon), but here are the top five on my current wish list.

Pumpkin Spice Marshmallows

I am imaging homemade hot white chocolate (Just melt white chocolate with some milk, instead of using the regular milk or dark) and topped with these marshmallows. I can think of nothing better for a chilly fall night!

The description says this combination of candied grapefruit peel, jalapeno, and candied ginger would taste great atop goat cheese. I believe it.

I have been yearning to make pies lately. Maybe it is the hint of fall in the air....er, no. The wholesome feeling of baking for my husband....er, not that, either. The addiction I have a a flaky, crispy yet buttery, pie crust? Yes, that completely. I LURVE pie crust. with filling, without filling, just a big fat yes. At an awesome Fall County Fair themed party this weekend, one of our members made a Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, with an orange pie crust. ORANGE. PIE. CRUST. Oh my. Here is a link to her blog post on Farthing Collective talking about it, the love for scratch, handmade cooking, and the recipe for the pie.

This past weekend, I also stumbled upon this post for Mini Pies in a Jar. You can bet your patootie that as soon as I find those jars, my freezer will be stocked!

One of the best things about being an Etsy seller is scoping out the other artists' amazing projects! I can spend hours on Etsy just browsing and shopping, so buying handmade was my first choice for unique Christmas gifts last year.

I get excited about books, journals, writing and editing so when I found these, they were perfect for bookworm friends. I have purchased several journals from Blue Toad, and gave two of them away as gifts. Of course, I had to keep one for myself! Bound by hand, each journal consists of blank pages alternated with pages from road maps, or tear sheets. The outside is canvas painted with different original artwork, and now several of the journals have handmade stoneware closures.

I’m especially smitten with the “tree of free spirit” journal, as it features a tree on the cover. It’s so perfect and pretty...I haven’t even written in it yet!

Spreading the Joy of Jewelry

When Rachel sent out an email to CrownTown Members, asking if anyone wanted to help her with a jewelry project involving Girl Scouts, I answered so fast my keyboard smoked. I was only a Girl Scout for a short while, but I firmly believe in doing whatever you can to empower young girls. On Aug 21, I was able to help Rachel Taliaferro of Rachel Taliaferro Art Jewelry as she taught some wonderful York County Girl Scouts the art of making jewelry to obtain their jewelry badges. We started off with some jewelry history, how to craft jewelry ourselves, materials (AKA, borrow Dad's tools), and how we can use vintage and found items in jewelry. Then, Rachel taught them how to make paper beads, and while we waited for the beads to dry enough to string, everyone decoupaged some jewelry boxes. Who doesn't love Mod Podge?!?

I know I can speak for Rachel in saying that we had a great time spending the morning with the girls, and moms. Thank you so much for letting us share our knowledge (and love!) of jewelry with you!

Taking a cue from kinetic sculptor Alexander Calder, Rachel will show you how to make grown-up mobiles out of wire, string, origami, paper and/or found objects. Artist Spotlight: Tricia Schepp

This month's Artist Interview is with CrownTown Handmade member Tricia Schepp, of CreativeLove. Tricia makes portable works of art that she calls 'cubicle couture', so if you sit in an office all day, you will especially appreciate these little rays of sunshine that brighten up even the grey-est of grey cubicles!

She recently took a few minutes out of her schedule to answer some questions, so we could get to know her better!

CTHm: What inspired you to begin crafting? Were you always creative or did it come later?

I've always been creating something. I was involved in art club in high school where I fell in love with painting. My painting skills never went beyond high school level (haha) so I kept trying new projects. My elective courses in college were always art classes. I made my own cards for a while (I love receiving and sending cards the old snail-mail way!) and adore photography. I am interested in learning new skills and like to dabble in everything.

CTHm: Your shop is full of cute magnets and 'cubicle couture'. Describe 'cubicle couture' and what was it about magnets that attracted you (heh)?

Cubicle Couture is a way to inspire the corporate worker to stay imaginative with a bit of sassy attitude. They are great at work to brighten up a boring space or cubicle and make great co-worker gifts. Each set is unique and themed and many of my orders are personalized sets for bridal parties or special events. I made my first set of magnets when I literally needed something to post takeout menus on the side of my fridge. I hadn't planned on making more than one set but as friends saw them, the custom orders and ideas started spilling in. I created several sets for friends and family and opened my Etsy shop in 2008. The process started with a lot of trial and error with products and supplies. As I got more into it, my supply purchasing, packaging and branding improved greatly.

CTHm: Like many crafters, you work a separate full time job. How do you make time to create?

My creative time has to just happen randomly. It is generally on my weeknights into the wee hours of the night. I'm definitely a night owl when it comes to creativity. When I have a craft show coming up, I kick it into gear and spend hours and hours creating to music (and perhaps a glass of red). Saturday mornings are also a good time for me to sit with my coffee and my little monster, Charlotte the cat.

CTHm: Tell us about your creative process.

I love to browse magazines and store catalogs for inspiration. I'm usually spread out across my kitchen counter and coffee table arranging images. I can't create in silence so I'm usually grooving to whatever station I find on the radio. Mornings are perfect for taking my product photos before the sun is in full force. I take frequent breaks to text friends and check email... the normal addictions :)

CTHm: Why is buying handmade important to you?

Handmade is so much more interesting! Each piece has a story... it was detailed by an artist who spent time to make it unique. I also enjoy that a lot of artists are upcycling old products to make something new. I have a contemporary/eclectic style which is perfect for buying things handmade.

I try to give gifts that are handmade items by other local artists. Non-typical gifts are always a surprise. With a bit of imagination, you can make something from nothing. I feel good purchasing from an artist -- it's a win-win situation.

My Shopping Challenge: 140 "Shops" in 20 Minutes

We're always sharing photos with you of our members behind booths at craft shows, festivals, and events. But have you ever wondered what it's like from the other side of the table?

Summer is the time for craft fairs, and this past month, I've sold at two, with one more on the schedule. And many of my fellow Crown Town crafters have also been there, behind the booths. Yes, there's weeks on end of prepping, making, planning, crafting tags and packaging. There's packing up the car (my vote for the worst activity - goodness, will it all fit?!), hauling heavy things to your spot, set-up, take-down, packing up the car (again!), and unloading (sometimes a week later - we're all guilty).

But there's nothing that beats the rush you get from having all your handmade wares out in the community for people to see and ooooh and ahhhh over. For just one little day, or even a few hours, it's like having your own store complete with displays and the fine details - just a taste of something we all dream about. It's also very helpful to sit back and watch shoppers' reactions, to see in person what works, what doesn't and best of all, what products people get absolutely giddy over.

But the hardest part (aside from packing up the car), is looking out from behind the booth, hands outstretched, wanting to touch and try on all the other little doo-dads and handmade what-nots that aren't yours. And the alarm: they're here, for one time only! We want to get out there and get giddy over handmade too!

A few weeks ago, I was selling at Asheville's biannual fair, The Big Crafty. This event had over 140 indie crafters. They were spread inside and out, in every nook and cranny of the Asheville Art Museum. Just from looking across the pavement, if I had a couple of hours and a wallet full of cash, I knew there would be trouble.

My birthday and holiday shopping lists were in my purse, ready to go, and a promise several years old of giving as many gifts of the homemade, handmade, or secondhand variety as possible. What better place to mark a few people off than at a maker's fair with the highest concentration of cool stuff I had ever seen?

The dilema: my boyfriend and booth-mate, Paul, thinks he really sucks at selling women's clothing and that it's totally obvious that he had no part in making the things at my booth. He gets anxious being left there for too long. So I waited... I knew the slow time would come, and then I could pounce.

After lots of wonderful sales to some lovely people, the cash in my pocket was getting hot. A rain shower drove some of the shoppers back indoors, and I saw my moment... Paul was well-supplied with instructions, had already given the credit card machine a few swipes, kind of knew how to tie a bow on a package, and if nothing else, he had his cell phone to call in case of emergency. Wallet and list in hand, I was off!

I have never shopped so quickly in all my life. Over 140 booths in about 20 minutes. How I did it, I'll never know. There was no lingering, no long and meaningful conversations with my fellow makers, just pure purchasing power! I made some of the quickest shopping decisions of my life. Object in hand, there was only one question: "Do I want it? Decide now!"

My twenty-minute shopping marathon was successful. I came back with a holiday gift for Paul, birthday gifts for two friends, a letterpressed postcard to send my friend in Wyoming, and a little gift for myself! I can only share the shop links to some of these, because I can't give away any surprises, but you can see a photo of the cute headband, and my button-ring from my series of 10-minute shopping sprints at this month's Crafty Feast in Columbia. And please, if you were at a craft fair recently, share your finds with us, so that I(we)can live vicariously.

Stitch’N Bitch Crochet –The Happy Hooker by Debbie Stoller

I am an avid crocheter, and love to talk to people about crochet. The most common response when talking to someone who has tried crocheting is “I am having a hard time getting it, the book I have is so confusing.” So, when I come across a product or an idea that is life changing, I can’t help but want to share! Time for me to interject my life changing experience with Stitch’ N Bitch Crochet; The Happy Hooker by Debbie Stoller.

I had been crocheting for about 7 years when I bought this book. I had taught myself how to crochet by reading various pamphlets and beginners books, which meant I was able to get the basic concepts, but when it came to little details I was lost. I came across the Happy Hooker at the library and checked it out 3 or 4 times before I finally broke down and bought it. The information it gives in unlike any other crochet book.

This book is wonderful at illustrating the basics of crochet, with helpful drawings and funny headings such as “Secrets of the Yarn-Yarn Sisterhood” and “I Like Big Buttons and I Cannot Lie.” It has easy to read charts that give you a quick references for yarn weights, stitch abbreviations and how many stitches to put in your turning chain...something I have always had trouble with!

One of the other great aspects of this books is the collection of modern crochet patterns within. While Debbie Stoller is the author of this book, you will find that the patterns in this book are an assortment of unique items by various crochet artists, everything from bags and hats to a crocheted bikini and twine doormats.

This past fall my boyfriend asked me if I could make a baby hat for his friend’s new daughter. I had never attempted a hat, so I flipped open the Happy Hooker and found a great pattern for an earflap hat. The hat went over so well that it pushed me to finally begin selling my crochet work.
I believe that you will find that this book is well worth the price. It is packed full of 40 original patterns and easy to understand instructions. Knitters, you aren't forgotten! Check out Stoller’s Stitch N’ Bitch Nation; The Knitter’s Handbook.

Etsy Craft Party Recap

Cupcakes, prizes, and terrariums... oh my! Crown Town Handmade's "Etsy Craft Party" was a smashing success. Makers mingled, cupcakes were consumed, and moss was jarred. Crafters from all over Charlotte congregated at Midwood Park to celebrate Etsy's 5th birthday. Amanda Fisher, of Verabelle Vintage, even made a custom Crown Town pennant banner in honor of the celebration. Attendees participated in a craft supply swap, a drool worthy raffle, and a terrarium making extravaganza (more on that later). Thanks Crown Town, for hosting a great party!

Object of Affection: Transportation Quilt

This past year has been a complete whirlwind. I became a mom for the first time, quit my job as a teacher, and started my own business. I literally feel from time to time that I can’t do it all. Giving bottles, filling orders, hunting down supplies, cooking meals…it is a lot to handle! What these past few months have done is rekindle my love for sewing and creating. In the craziness of it all, I love it when something wonderful and beautiful just stops me in my tracks. My need for a creative outlet has been fulfilled through my little Etsy store, www.touchofgraydesigns.etsy.com .

My husband’s grandmother was a seamstress. He would always tell me stories of how she would sew him clothes, blankets, and lots of little toys. I found the quilt in a box, which had been passed down to us for our son. When I opened the box and saw the transportation quilt, I was amazed. Each square is a different method of transportation, and is beautifully appliquéd. I am not a quilter, but I know this amazing quilt must have taken so much time and love, something a grandmother made for her grandson. It is perfect for a little boy…perfect.

I plan to put this quilt on the wall in my son’s playroom. I hope that when I look at it I can understand the hours and hours of love and talent she poured into this quilt, reminding me to slow down, and be thankful that I also have the potential to create something beautiful. I am excited that it now belongs to my son and I hope he will treasure this quilt made by his great-grandmother for years to come.

CTHm:How long have you been making jewelry?

I began making jewelry in the late 1990s after I discovered pre-notched prong settings. Since I already had a faceted gemstone collection and had been wanting to make a piece of jewelry for myself, I purchased a setting and set my own stone for a pendant which I still have and wear. That opened to the door to exploring other types of handmade jewelry. Soon I was making jewelry for friends and family. I opened a shop on Etsy and have been selling wire wrapped jewelry there since 2006.

CTHm:Where did the name “MsBelle” come from?

When I was in college, a boyfriend began calling me Ms. Belle due to my southern accent. It sort of stuck. When it came time to pick a user name on Etsy, I thought of that. So my shop name became MsBelle as a result.

CTHm:Where do you draw your inspiration?

Ideas come from all around, but they mainly come from my favorite medium: gemstones. They provide such a diverse palette of color, variety, texture, form and shape, leading to limitless opportunities for creating. But ideas can spring from most anything. Nature provides us ample inspiration in the form of trees, flowers, the sunset, etc. Mother Nature has some great color palettes! Sometimes items just sitting piled up next to each other on my workspace provide inspiration. I'm often surprised by what is right in front of me. And customers can be a great inspiration too. Often times their ideas lead to new ways of looking at things, allowing you to be able to imagine something in a totally different way. So inspiration comes from everywhere.

CTHm:What types of crafty things do you enjoy doing other than making jewelry?

I used to cross-stitch quite a bit and enjoyed that. I've also made wooden crafts, primitive crafts, picture frames, soy wax tart melts, salt dough ornaments and a few other things. But jewelry is my favorite and everything else sort of went by the wayside. I love gemstones and jewelry so much that making jewelry now takes the top spot.

CTHm:Why do you feel that it's important to buy handmade?

Buying handmade supports people who are dedicated to their craft and love what they do. They usually turn out higher quality pieces than you will ever find in any super store near you. Artisans often work day and night on their craft, probably including your piece. They put a little bit of their heart and soul into everything they create. I like knowing that when you support handmade, you help support someone who cares deeply about their product and I would hope someone would like to support that in me.

CTHm:What advice do you have for other artists to make the most of their online shopping presence?

Gosh, I'm no expert when it comes to that and could probably use some advice myself! I suppose what I would say is given the various social media outlets that are available (blog, Twitter, Facebook, etc.), try to get yourself on one or more and make yourself seen and heard. Make connections. Friends can be very supportive and help spread the word about your work as well. It's very helpful to also be supportive and complimentary of others. It's a two way street. First and foremost though, make sure you have a quality product and provide the best customer service you possibly can. Treat your customers as you want to be treated. You can form some great relationships with some of your best customers that may eventually turn into friendships as well. There are numerous other outlets to gain exposure such as advertising on blogs, Facebook ads, promotional giveaways. The opportunities are out there. You just have to figure out what works best for you.

CTHm:What is a typical day like for you?

It's typical for most people I'd say. I get up, feed Barney (our dachshund), and then get my son fed, make his lunch and get him ready for school. My husband takes him to school on his way to work. After he's gone, I shower, eat my breakfast and have a cup of coffee (or two or three). Then I do my Wii fit which is so much fun. I then go check emails, check my Etsy shop, Facebook, Twitter and Flickr. If I need to attend to any shipping, I get the packages ready as well. Then it's on to the domestic duties such as dishes, picking up toys, etc., after which I sometimes either make jewelry, or photograph or edit photos of pieces that have already been made. (This is when I usually end up spending way too much time talking to my friends online though, but they help keep me sane!) Before you know it, lunch time rolls around and not long after that it's time to go pick up the boy. Afternoons are spent helping with homework, running errands or going to appointments, or maybe a trip to the park. Then it's back home for supper. We often watch a favorite TV show or movie and then it's bedtime. After everyone else is asleep, I go back on the computer or return to making jewelry or editing photographs, listing items on Etsy, etc. I usually end up going to bed around midnight, sometimes later. And then it begins again!

Charlotte Gets Crafty with Crown Town Handmade

Crown Town Handmade, Charlotte's new group of artistic entrepreneurs, is hosting its second monthly Make Out session Thursday, May 27, at 7:30 PM. The event is free and will take place at Patchwerk Playhaus, in the back room of Century Vintage, 1508 Central Avenue in Charlotte.

Sarah Terry, designer and maker behind local edgy accessory business, Stitch Machine, will be teaching this month's how-to on tie-dyed underwear. From panty hose to briefs to slips to boxers, community members can give their unmentionables a boost of summer color.

Participants must bring their own underwear to dye and should wear clothes that they don't mind messing up. Supplies are free, but donations are gladly accepted.
To participate, bring at least one of the following:

(A) CLEAN used/vintage slips, bras, camisoles, undershirts, or leggings;
(B) NEW washed underwear/boxers/briefs or socks.

For sanitary reasons, no used underwear bottoms are permitted to be dyed in our dye baths. New underwear dyes best after it is washed to remove “sizing” and chemicals. Natural fibers like 100% cotton, linen and silk work best. Cotton blends will
work, but will dye lighter. White or light colored items dye best.

Those 21 and over can bring their own alcohol to Patchwerk Playhaus with a $5 corking fee per container (bottle of wine/6-pack).

Crown Town Make Out sessions are free craft workshops for the community, designed to spread the DIY spirit and get people making their own handmade creations. A different Crown Town Handmade artist will teach a craft to the community each month, and the group will cover a widerange of topics for both the new and experienced crafter.

Make Out sessions will regularly occur the last Thursday of each month at 7:30 PM at the Patchwerk Playhaus. All ages are welcome.

If racing is not your thing, avoid the traffic and head to the Third Annual Charlotte FemmeFest in NoDa tonight, 5:30pm - 1:30am. FemmeFest celebrates women in the arts and benefits women in the community. Lots of music, art, shopping with 50+ vendors, and of course, food!

The third annual Charlotte FemmeFest will be held at N. Davidson and 36th Street, in NoDa, Charlotte’s art district, on Saturday, May 22nd, 2010 from 5:30pm to 1am. This year’s host venues include The Evening Muse, The Neighborhood Theater, Dolce Vita, Smelly Cat Coffeehouse, the Outdoor Stage at Salvador Deli and the art galleries of the North Davidson Street Arts District.

Charlotte FemmeFest 2010 will feature national, regional and local music acts and visual artists. The evening will include a wide variety of genres from folk to hip hop, including Jill Andrews, Wavy Space, Doria Roberts, Amelia’s Mechanics, Mieka Pauley, The Alpha Theory, Natalie Royal and many more acts to be announced. Visual artists will be featured in the NoDa galleries and in an emerging artist exhibit in the Neighborhood Theatre.

Charlotte FemmeFest aims to reach, inspire, and strengthen our cultural community by showcasing the diverse work of emerging and established female voices throughout the region and beyond. In addition, FemmeFest will continue to assist non-profit organizations that serve the women and children in our community. Through music and art, our minds are expanded, our hearts warmed and our souls nourished.

This year the proceeds from Charlotte FemmeFest will benefit the women and children of Center of Hope Women & Children’s Shelter. Families who are homeless, hungry and hurting can come to the Center of Hope to be fed, sheltered, clothed, trained, and most importantly, loved. The Center of Hope is the largest women and children's homeless shelter in the Southeast.

We're gearing up for our first monthly Make Out session at Patchwerk Playhaus, the back room of Century Vintage, located at 1508 Central Avenue in Charlotte. Join us Thursday, April 29 at 7:30 PM. Supplies will be provided and Donna Kirby of In Ten Years will be leading this month's craft on wearable felt flowers. This is a perfect craft for Mother's Day, and you'll be able to walk away with a free gift for mom (or for yourself!). Using various colors of felt and vintage buttons, there are limitless combinations of color and style. These versatile and fun flowers can be used to embellish clothing and objects. This project is perfect for both beginner and experienced crafters. You better mark your calendars now, folks, because this one is free!

I'm Seeing Hearts... Valentine's Craft Attack

This past Saturday, February 6, local artisans gathered to sell their handmade wares at Craft Attack. Tables with everything from jewelry to handspun yarn to greeting cards lined the atrium at Amelie's Bakery. Three of our Crown Town Handmade members had booths set up: Amanda from Verabelle, Sarah from Stitch Machine, and Vanessa from Skwrrl Collective. Trish from Creative Love and Melissa from Mason and Virginia also swung by to hangout for a bit. We also met some new crafty folks, a few of which may be appearing on the virtual pages of Crown Town Handmade very soon!

What has happened so far....

Eight Charlotte crafters got together several times in November 2009 to organize a huge online giveaway - the Crown Town Handmade Prize Pack. We got together once more for a craft night where we sipped Bee's Knees drinks, ate button shaped cookies, talked about what we had to offer, and refined the direction our group should go. We are in the process of creating an online presence. A craft night for the community is in the works. Information about how to join Crown Town Handmade will be available shortly!
